For producing high-tension or high-frequency currents from a Ruhmkorff coil, a second primary coil 5 and a condenser 7 are connected across the interrupter 4 &c., so that the discharges of the condenser set up oscillations in the coil 5. The secondary 6 of the coil 5 may be connected to the secondary 3 of the usual primary coil 2, and the discharges from the secondaries may be utilized simultaneously or independently. A cautery 9 &c. may be connected in circuit with the coil 5 and the condenser.

The coil is excited by a source of current or by revolving it in a magnetic field, and by means of a two-way switch one or both of the connexions of the coil are suddenly shifted from the source of current to the circuit of the Ruhmkorff coil or other appliance. .. the iron core may be three inches in diameter and from two to three feet long.
