The Confeti Project
Fertilizing the Future
A self-powered, sustainable solution from CO2 and
N-compounds.
Our aim is to create an environmentally friendly and
energy-efficient way of producing fertilizers without
using vital resources, and with zero chemical waste
and carbon emissions.

Researchers produce urea in the field using
system powered by biobatteries and solar energy
The CONFETI project, coordinated by the Universitat
Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), has concluded three years
of research with the commissioning of a pilot system
capable of producing urea, a nitrogen fertilizer
widely used in agriculture, directly in the field
using renewable energy. This fertilizer is produced
from carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrates in an
electrochemical reactor powered by energy from
biobatteries and solar panels.
The experimental installation, located in an
agricultural setting in Viladecans, also incorporates
a photochemical reactor that produces ammonia, a key
compound used in urea production, using sunlight.
Bringing this system into operation is one of the main
milestones of the project, which has taken the
technologies it developed into the field to explore
alternatives to conventional nitrogen fertilizer
production processes. The prototype has continued to
operate throughout the summer and following recent
periods of heavy rainfall, while the consortium
continues to study its performance under real-world
conditions.
"The main challenge has been moving the device from
the laboratory to an agricultural setting. It has been
one of the most difficult tasks," explains Gonzalo
Guirado, a professor in the UAB's Department of
Chemistry and project coordinator. "Thanks to the
team's efforts, it has been possible to validate the
devices and their components in the laboratory and
bring them here for testing in a real-world setting,"
he adds.
The CONFETI system combines three complementary
technological developments. The first is an
electrochemical reactor that produces urea from CO₂
and nitrates. The reaction produces this fertilizer
through a process that offers an alternative to
conventional industrial methods, which are
energy-intensive and have a high environmental impact.
One of the system's distinctive features is that the
reactor is powered by a combination of biobatteries
and solar panels. The biobatteries use microbial
activity and organic matter present in the soil to
generate electricity. An electronic system manages
this energy together with the energy from the solar
panels to power the electrochemical reactor. Both
energy generation systems are operating at the pilot
installation and constitute the second development.
The third is a photochemical reactor that converts
nitrates in water into ammonia, using sunlight and a
photocatalyst. The process also allows this material
to be separated and recovered for reuse. The
technology is designed to make use of nitrates that
crops do not absorb, with the aim of recovering them
and reusing them as fertilizers.
Integrating the different devices into an installation
in an agricultural setting has been one of the
project's main challenges. Unlike laboratory tests,
the pilot system is exposed to weather conditions and
the specific characteristics of its surroundings,
allowing its operation to be studied under conditions
closer to those of a future application.
The trials are helping to characterize the different
components and the integrated system, and to identify
the technical issues that will need to be addressed in
subsequent stages of development.
"What we want to demonstrate with CONFETI is that
there is another way to produce fertilizers, using
pollutants such as CO₂ and nitrates and converting
them into value-added products with green energy,"
says Guirado. "In addition, our technology allows
fertilizers to be produced sustainably at the very
place where they will be used, and supplied on demand,
so that they do not need to be stored."

Green valorization of CO2 and Nitrogen
compounds for making fertilizers
Electrochemical and sun-driven technology for
green fertilisers
Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of
many countries, and increased productivity reduces
global poverty and energy consumption. A renewable
carbon and nitrogen economy supports sustainable
models. The EIC-funded CONFETI project’s goal is to
develop innovative lab-scale technology capable of
capturing and electrochemically converting CO2 and N2
directly from air or flue gases into urea using
renewable energy, without relying on critical raw
materials. The project also intends to recycle NO3
into ammonia and/or urea through photocatalytic
technology driven by sunlight, establishing a circular
and renewable carbon and nitrogen economy. The
technology proposed for synthesising and delivering
urea fertilisers aligns with sustainable agriculture
practices. The project’s objectives are to enhance
resource efficiency, support sustainability, and
ensure the safety and quality of products.

When irreversible no longer means forever
New study shows long-assumed irreversible AGEs can be
removed from aged human tissue ex vivo – opening a new
chapter in damage repair. Now, researchers from Revel
Pharmaceuticals, working with collaborators at Calico
and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical
Campus, report the development of an engineered enzyme
capable of removing one of the most abundant AGE
modifications, Nε-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML), from
proteins in aged human tissues ex vivo. Published in
Nature Communications, the study offers proof of
principle that at least one form of molecular damage
long considered effectively irreversible may, in fact,
be repairable...

What Every American Needs to Know about the
Qur'an: A History of Islam & the United States
William J. Federer
You will be fascinated by this fast-paced, objective
history of the world from a perspective you have never
imagined. Current events will come into focus in the
back drop of 1,400 years of inconceivable yet true
events and conflicts. Thousands of books, documents
and articles have been researched over several years
in preparation for this book. In 2006, Keith Ellison
became the first Muslim elected to the United States
Congress. He swore in on a Qur'an. Most Americans know
little about the Qur'an, who wrote it and how Islam
spread. Within 100 years of Mohammed's death, his
followers conquered North Africa, the Holy Land,
Persia, Spain - from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic
Ocean. President Barak Obama stated in Cairo, Egypt,
June 4, 2009: "Islam has always been a part of
America's story." Indeed, Islam has affected the
Western World for 1,400 years, from 622 AD to today's
headlines. This book will give you a fascinating
glimpse into captivating events and amazing stories-
you won't want to put it down! Find answers to how
Islam is connected to: • The stirrup for riding
horses, who invented it and how Muslims used it to win
military conquests? • Santa Claus - how Islam caused
the story of Saint Nicholas to spread from the
Byzantine Empire to Western Europe in 1087 AD? •How
